NO SORE
Bedsore Prevention Mat Designed for Elderly Care

The Idea in Short
When my grandmother developed pressure sores from rehabilitation and engaging in convalescence in bed for months, I have seen her been through so much pain and discomfort. I can see that it requires caregivers, guardians or members of the family to be in charge of the nursing process 24/7. This has created a great impact for me to develop an idea of designing a tool that can detect early warning signs for the caregivers to notice. The solution to this is No Sore, the device that comes with a smart pressure-detection mattress system that alerts caregivers before bedsores occur.

Where It Began
How It Started
My grandmother’s long bedsore recovery period made me realized how painful and exhausting consequences of pressure sore.
Every single senior and bed ridden should be accessible to affordable devices to improve their quality of convalescence for a better longevity. The idea has inspired me to emphasize in exploring the fundamental cause in a broader area and site of bedshore along with potential assistive technologies.
When visiting and conducting research at nursing homes, I discovered that bedsores are a much bigger problem than I had expected, especially in places with far more patients than nurses.

Spotted Problem
At the nursing home, I learned that due to the shortage of staff the patient reposition cannot be done every two hours as recommended.
Bedsores often develop rapidly, while there is lack of human efficiency to prevent the cause of it and no applicable tool to provide real time updates for warning prior to the cause.
This shortcoming inspired me to develop a practical device to compassionate solutionsใ

Potential Impact
Thailand has about 500,000 bedridden elderly people nationwide, with 50,000–60,000 new pressure sore cases reported each year (Department of Health, 2023).
Around 200,000 elderly patients require long-term treatment for chronic pressure sores annually.
If developed at scale, this assisted product could help prevent thousands of these cases, reduce caregiver workloads and hospital costs, and improve the quality of life for Thailand’s aging population.

The Journey of Making
Idea Planning
I planned that this bed sore prevention mat will consist of
pressure sensor pads: to be embedded in the mattress
processing unit: to analyze pressure at each point
smart alert system: to notify caregivers in real time via an app.
This way, caregivers can act before sores develop, reduce their workload, and improve the quality of life for elderly patients.
