FALL AWARE

Helping Seniors Stay Safe and Independent with Smart Fall Detection

The Idea in Short

The intention of Fall Aware has developed from a number of elderly people who have difficulties in walking and balancing themselves. Some are required to be tied to their beds to avoid falling. My plan is to develop a small and wearable device that could detect falling incidents instantly to alert caregivers, which will allow the elderly to have freedom and better quality of life without sacrificing safety.

Where It Began

How It Started

  • During my research for the No Sore project, I visited nursing homes and saw many seniors struggling to walk or tied to beds out of fear of falling.

  • I could relate to their pain as I once had an experience in breaking my toe. Therefore, I understand the pain that the fall can cause especially in case of fragile elders, which can consequently be more severe.

  • I decided to apply the knowledge from developing a smart falling motion device from the previous model that I used to design, which had won a Gold Award as a fundamental in order to expand further development to achieve a better performance of the device.

Spotted Problem

  • Falling is one of the most common and serious threats to seniors, often leading to fractures, long recoveries, or even death.

  • Many elderly people must live with fear of falling, which limits their daily movement that lower their self-esteem.

  • Worse still, caregivers often do not know when or where a fall happens, which can turn a preventable incident into a life-threatening one.

Potential Impact

  • Thailand records over 165,000 elderly hospitalizations yearly from falls, with 1,472 deaths reported in 2023 (Department of Disease Control, 2024).

  • Nearly 30% of seniors with hip fractures die within a year, and over half lose their ability to walk.

  • An intelligent fall detection system could help in order to cut fatal cases, speed up emergency response, and enhance safety and independence in seniors daily life.

The Journey of Making

Idea Planning

Fall Aware is designed as a compact wearable device, about the size of a bottle cap. It is lightweight, waterproof, and unobtrusive to daily life. Inside, it includes:

  • Smart Sensor (Gyro + Accelerometer): Detects impacts and falls.

  • GPS Tracker: Pinpoints location when a fall occurs.

  • Alert System: Instantly notifies caregivers via smartphone.

If a fall occurs, the system will be activated to send an immediate alert, allowing caregivers to respond quickly to the fall incident.

Looking Ahead

I aim to develop Fall Aware for use in nursing homes, private residences, and home care systems. My goal is to create a lightweight, safe, sweatproof, and waterproof device designed for daily wear during waking hours. I hope this device can help reduce elderly fall-related deaths in Thailand at least 50% by 2032.
